Sabers cash in Montrose mistakes
Susquehanna made the most of its opportunities in its rivalry game with Montrose Friday night.
Scoring three touchdowns on turnovers, the Sabers rolled to a 35-0 win over the Meteors in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division III game.
On Montrose’s first possession, a bad snap on a punt gave Susquehanna a first-and-goal from the 5-yard line.
One play later, Greg Price gave the Sabers a 7-0 lead and they never looked back.
A fumble on Montrose’s next possession gave Susquehanna a short field when Nick Marco recovered the loose ball on the Meteors’ 13-yard line.
This time it took two plays when quarterback Dan Kempa darted into the end zone to up the lead to 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Trailing, 20-0, at the half, Montrose successfully recovered an onside kick to open the second half, but couldn’t move the ball.
Following a punt, Price took the handoff on the first offensive play and weaved through the defense for a 75-yard touchdown run, his second of the game.
Price finished with 135 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Following another Montrose fumble, Kempa added his second touchdown run in the fourth quarter, this one covering 32 yards.
In addition to Montrose’s struggles holding onto the ball, it also had problems moving it.
Susquehanna’s (2-0 in Division III, 6-1 overall) defense allowed only 81 total yards of offense – all rushing – and gave up only two first downs to the Meteors.
Montrose (0-2, 0-7) crossed into Susquehanna territory just once and that was only to the 49-yard line.
Kempa finished with 51 yards rushing on nine carries.
Ethan Jones led Montrose with 36 rushing yards.
