During the June 15, meeting of the Susquehanna Community School Board representative of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees of Susquehanna County, President Bob Orner, Mary Ketterer, Ellen Holdredge and Evelyn Gerchman were on hand to honor a member of the SCSD faculty and a member of the district’s support staff.

Holdredge told board members they were there to present the Lauretta Woodson Award to Carolyn Homer, a fourth grade teacher.

According to Holdredge, Woodson was a prominent Pennsylvania educator and an active member of PASR. Upon her death she left a bequest to honor those who exhibited creativity, initiative and productivity relative to the learning process and growth of children.

Homer had been nominated by Superintendent Bronson Stone and selected by PASR for her accomplishments in the school district. “You have successfully run the fourth grade environmental camp held at Camp Tuscarora,” Holdredge said.

Cooking was included in her duties, the board was told.

“Within the classroom, your focus on making the students the best they can be and your belief that all students will learn has made you an asset in your student’s education,” Holdredge added.

The Woodson award presented by Orner was a framed plaque, a medal and as a token from the PASR, a gift card.

Also honored was Carla Perry, a support professional at SCSD. Perry received the award for doing an outstanding job by working efficiently with special needs students on a daily basis. “A colleague described you as a wonderful person who the students love,” Holdredge said.

Having a positive demeanor with a willingness to help in any way are among the attributes that prove you are also worthy of the Woodson Award, Holdredge added.

Perry was also presented with a plaque, medal and a gift card.

Holdredge thanked the board for the opportunity to make the awards and invited both Homer and Perry to join PASR after they retire.
