Meteor stickgals have positivity

Montrose Area’s varsity field hockey team is returning for a new season under second-year coach Brianna Young.

Young returns four seniors, one junior and a sophomore starter to the field after losing five seniors to graduation.

Despite a tough season in 2010 with the Meteors going 0-12-2 on the season, Young is optimistic about the new campaign.

“I believe this season will be the first of many successful seasons,” Young said. “With success measured by teamwork, positive attitudes and overall individual and team improvement.”

Young said the team had a great first week of practice and that the Meteors are returning to the field with a positive attitude, a will to persevere and a lot of talent.

Returning starters for the Meteors include seniors Emily Kinney, Katie Stranburg, Rina Nikolaidis and Anna Hamernick, junior Ashley Lewis and sophomore Kayleah Trecoske.

Young said that all the teams in the Meteors division will be tough competition, but that she expects the Meteors to face their biggest challenges from Pittston,ElkLakeandHanover.

The team will look to Hamernick, Nikolaidis, Lewis, Trcoske, Maria Phillips, Samantha Turner and Rebecca Timm to stand out on the field.

The Montrose Area varsity field hockey team is comprised of seniors Hamernick, Kinney, Stranburg, Nikolaidis, Taylor Wright, Allison Jones, Emmie Gibson and Allegra Spero, juniors Phillips, Lewis, Turner, Makayla Dearborn and Kelsey Brink, sophomores Trecoske, Timm, Laura Brink, Olivia Everitt, Callista Newhart and Morgan Updyke, and freshmen Abbey Capwell, Alyx Zapolski and Amber Cain.
