Jail time for pot grower

A Montrose-area man found with over 300 marijuana plants on his property last year will spend six to 23-1/2 months in jail on the drug charge.

John Paul Bennett, 55, was sentenced Thursday in Susquenanna County Court. He pleaded guilty in June to a felony count of drug manufacturing.

On Aug. 27, 2010, the Susquehanna County District Attorney’s Office Drug Task Force seized 276 marijuana plants that were growing in four separate plots adjacent to the Bennett residence. Plants seized ranged from four- to eight-feet in height.

An additional 31 marijuana plants in the process of being dried were seized from a truck trailer on the property.

A dump truck from the state Dept. of Transportation was used to haul the plants from the scene.

According to court documents, at the time of his arrest Bennett told investigators he had been growing marijuana on his property for three or four years.
