Meteors overpowered by Holy cross

Montrose fell victim to a tenacious Holy Cross defense on Friday night as the Crusaders came out to put 35 points on the board in the first half in a 49-6 rout at home.

Holy Cross quarterback Rob Heyen led Holy Cross to the end zone on its first three possessions, with a deep, 50-yard touchdown pass to Louis Gianacopolous sandwiched by two rushing scores.

Heyen combined for 144 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the first two quarters.

“We didn’t come out to play tonight, we did battle some injuries all week, but that’s no excuse,” Montrose head coach Russell Canevari said. “Holy Cross is very big up front and very athletic in the backfield. Our gameplan was to keep (Heyen) inside the pocket, not let him get outside, but he made kids miss tonight.”

Holy Cross’ option offense kept the Montrose defense confused all night, and had just one play go for negative yards in the first half.

On the other side of the ball, Montrose could not get anything going against the Crusaders defense. The team’s most promising chance came on the first play of the game, when Will Ely rolled out on a running back pass and fired deep down the field, but just out of the reach of a wide-open Jeremy Dibble.

“I think if they had completed the pass, if they had gotten the play, it would have been a little different,” Stevens said. “They would have had momentum and you would have a had a dogfight. I honestly think they’re a dangerous team. If they get any kind of life, any kind of spark, they will be in games with people.”

Montrose got on the board in the fourth quarter, when Ely led his team on a 10-play, 70-yard drive that he capped off with a four-yard score with just under four minutes remaining in the game.

Holy Cross locked down after that chance, holding Montrose to two first downs in the first half.
