Penn Can schedules ‘Can Opener’ for April 20
The 2012 racing season swings into action at Penn Can Speedway with the annual “Can Opener” Friday April 20th. The mighty modifieds will be the featured division competing in a big thirty five lap feature event with $1500 going to the winner. The “Can Opener” at the three eighths mile oval will be sponsored by Don’s Automotive Mall of Binghamton, New York. Gates for opener will swing open at5:15 p.m.with the first heat race at7:30 p.m.
Joining the modifieds will be the 602 Sportsman competing in a twenty five lap feature sponsored by NEP Wireless ofForest City,Pennsylvania. This will be the first of four special events for the 602 Sportsman sponsored by NEP Wireless. Each of these events during the 2012 season will be for extra money with added laps. The “Can Opener” will also feature the first points race of the season for all divisions. The street stocks, four cylinders, and factory stocks will all be in competition. All divisions will draw for their heat race starting positions. The top drivers will then redraw for the feature.
2012 Penn Can modified champion, Kevin Hartnett, has announced that he will be back to defend his championship. This should make for an exciting season in the modified division with a host of talented drivers vying for the point championship. Many of the top teams from 2011 are expected to challenge Hartnett for the top spot including Kevin Bates, Dan Pompey, Mike Colsten, Bobby Trapper, Mike Schane, Darwin Greene,and a host of others. Modified drivers will again this season participate in the lucrative American Racer Cup adding extra incentive for the modified teams. Penn Can Speedway will again be offering a generous point fund in all divisions in 2012.
Interest has been high in all divisions. It is anticipated that a large group of rookies will enter the modified division making their move up from sportsman racing. A $500 Rookie of the Year bonus sponsored by Adams Cable will await the top finishing driver new to the division at Penn Can Speedway in 2012. This award is open to any driver that has not competed regularly in the modified division at Penn Can Speedway in any previous race season. The staff has also been working on programs for the other divisions as well. A special five race mini-series for the street stocks has been planned for 2012 sponsored by Trackside Products.
The purse in the street stock division has also been revamped and a major increase in the end of the year point fund has also been secured with the signing of S&W Awards as a class sponsor for the 2012 season. Many more new and exciting happenings will be announced in the near future.
Once again this season Penn Can Speedway has scheduled test and tune sessions for any division competing at the speedway in 2012. The dates of these test in tune sessions are Friday April 6th, Friday April 13th, and Sunday April 15th. The gates for the Friday sessions will open at5:30 p.m.with testing scheduled at6:30 p.m.The Sunday session will have gates opening at1 p.m.with testing at2 p.m.
