Roger Crawford of Prospect Street, Susquehanna, was the winner of the 2012 Biggest Pumpkin Contest held on Saturday, Oct. 6,   with a pumpkin weighing 967 pounds.

Ron and Sue Crawford, also of Prospect Street once again hosted one of the biggest parties held annually in the borough. Ever since the contest started it has been a contest between brothers Ron and Roger.

This year Ron came in second with a pumpkin weighing 826 pounds.

Danny Crawford, Roger’s son, made it a family affair by coming in third.

The event really starts on Friday when Ron, Roger, Dave Burman and other volunteers arrive to move the entered pumpkins to the Crawford property. This is no easy task as the 25 or more pumpkins must arrive whole for the weigh-in on Saturday.

In one corner of the area used for the party there was pumpkin art work displayed. The winner was a pumpkin painted with a portrait of Dave Burman, one of the organizers of the annual event, by Bob Winterstein of Montrose who received a Best of Show ribbon for his efforts.

Of course, the ribbon was pumpkin colored. Other ribbons and the trophy for the biggest pumpkin were awarded. While the weigh-in is in progress the guests are enjoying a buffet that starts with snacks, moves on to the appetizers and then main dishes. The desserts included many items made with pumpkin: pumpkin bread, pumpkin roll, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin cupcakes and even pumpkin fudge.
