Cop’s murder preliminary hearing continued

The preliminary hearing slated for Monday, Nov. 5, in New Milford District Court for the Montrose cop charged in the 1983 murder of his estranged wife has been continued.

John Walker, 52, Montrose, is now scheduled to appear before District Judge Jodi Cordner on Monday, Nov. 28.

Walker is accused of murdering Lynda Conrad Walker with a gunshot to her chest at the couple’s home in New Milford Twp. on Nov. 13, 1983.

The death had initially been ruled a suicide but the case was reopened in 2010 at the request of the county’s district attorney’s office.

The prosecution of the case is now being handled by the state attorney general’s office.

On Oct. 15, the Statewide Investigating Grand Jury recommended murder charges be filed against Walker. That charge was filed by Tpr. Greg Deck on Oct. 24 and Walker was taken into custody.

He is being held without bail in the Susquehanna County Correctional Facility.

Following an executive session at the Nov. 5 Montrose borough meeting, council recommended to Mayor John Wilson that Walker’s temporary suspension from the police force issued the day of his arrest be lifted and he be placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
