Elk Lake swimmers look to improve

Elk Lake’s swimming and diving team under direction of coaches Ed Murach and Marion Austin are looking to build upon last season’s finish.

The Warrior boys finished off last season with a 1-6 record, while the girls’ team took a 2-5 overall finish.

The Warriors will have to contend without Adam Phillips, a state medalist, and Abby Zdancewicz, a district medalist, this season, who both graduated last spring.

The Warriors also lost Cody Mowry, Rachel Grosvenor and Cathlene Farnelli to graduation after last season.

However, Elk Lake will return several key swimmers to the fray and will look to be competitive in their division.

Returning to the pool for the Warriors this season are seniors Bradley Grosvenor, Seth Carney, Lainey Bedell, Katie VanEtten and Kyla Riley, juniors Alex Manzek, Codie Malloy, Matt Sterner, Gabe Hamernick, Laura Brink and Sunny Griffiths and sophomores Leah Ofalt, Allyssa Hewitt, Julia Amorino and Rebecca Phillips.

Coach Ed Murach said he is hoping the Warriors will have a successful season.

“We are hoping for personal bests this season for everyone,” Murach said.

The team will look forward to its meet with rival Tunkhannock this season, and Murach said the Warriors will face a tough challenge from all its division foes.

“We’ll look to all of our returning swimmers to provide leadership as our new swimmers develop,” Murach said.

Elk Lake’s swimming and diving team will get its season underway on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at home at 4 p.m. against Berwick.
