Zurn-Bush duals on Saturday

On Saturday, the Elk Lake Warriors will play host to the 27th annual Zurn-Bush Memorial Wrestling Tournament.
The event is named for Kirk Zurn and Thomas Bush, both teachers and wrestling coaches at Elk Lake, who were killed in an accident in 1985 while replacing a roof. The school’s annual holiday wrestling tournament was renamed in their memory in 1986.
Elk Lake is returning after taking fourth place in the tournament last January.
This year’s Zurn-Bush tournament features seven teams in a round-robin style tournament, with all the wrestling action taking place in the elementary gym.
Teams involved in the tournament are Elk Lake, Blue Ridge, GAR Memorial, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose, Sayre and Scranton Prep.
Wrestling kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday with weigh-ins being conducted from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
The Warrior team, coached by Joe Ofalt, will bring returning wrestlers Frank Delesky, Derrick Smith and Isaiah Ofalt to the mats. Last week, Ofalt took a fifth place finish in the Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament.
Elk Lake athletic director Tony Blaisure said this is the first year in the past several that Montrose and Lackawanna Trail have taken part in the tournament.
The Meteors and Lions take the place of Nanticoke and Lake-Lehman, who have dropped out of the competition this year.
“It will be nice to add the local teams,” Blaisure said. “And hopefully having them here will increase attendance.”
With last year’s champion Lake-Lehman out of the picture, Blaisure believes that Scranton Prep has a great shot at taking home the tournament title.
“I think Scranton Prep has a good shot at it,” Blaisure said. “Their numbers are huge and they are competitive.”
Admission will be charged at the door with prices set at $4 for adults and $1 for students. Refreshments will also be available.
