New Milford tax collector resigns

After 20 years of service, New Milford Borough’s tax collector resigned from her post.

The resignation from Vicki Drake, effective Jan. 31, was accepted with regret Thursday night at the New Milford Borough Council meeting.

Councilman Rick Ainey also asked that a letter be sent to Drake thanking her for her years of service to New Milford.

Drake said, “I love the job. But after 20 years as tax collector it’s just time to move on to something different. I’ll miss the people.”

The resignation comes one month before municipal tax bills are due to go out but council members said that because of a missed deadline, those tax bills may be late this year.

Council also acted to appoint a person to the position to finish out the remainder of the elected term.

Karen Gudykunst was appointed by council to serve as the borough tax collector through Dec. 31.

The tax collector position is up for election this year.

In addition to Gudykunst, two other borough residents also expressed interest in the position: Joan Burman and Amy Conrad.

Council offered its thanks to all of the applicants for their interest and for “acting so quickly for the community.”

In taking the position of tax collector, Gudykunst resigned her auditor post, leaving a vacancy in the borough office.
