A Blue Ridge school bus was sent off the road and onto its side Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash caused by an alleged drunk driver in New Milford Borough. No school children were aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
Lance Landes, 29, of New Milford was traveling south on Rt. 11 when he swerved his vehicle into the northbound lane and into the path of the bus, driven by Carl Smith, 62, of New Milford. Landes swerved his vehicle to avoid stopped traffic in front of him, according to police reports.
Smith attempted to swerve the bus out of the way but was not able to avoid the impact. The bus then went off the road and rolled onto its side.
Police said Landes stayed at the scene for a brief time but then fled across a nearby junkyard, Cosmello’s U-Pull-It and into a wooded area.
Two motorists, who had stopped to assist at the scene, pursued Landes. Susquehanna County Deputy Sheriffs Donald Bennett and Jon Record came upon the crash scene and were alerted that Landes had fled on foot.
The deputies joined the foot chase, and with the help of the two motorists, took Landes in to custody.
Landes was arrested for suspicion of DUI by Tpr. Alan Deutsch.
Smith sustained a slight injury and was transported by ambulance for further evaluation.
The crash closed down a portion of Rt. 11 for nearly two hours. Traffic was diverted onto Orchard St. to bypass the scene.
