On Wednesday, June 5, Susquehanna Community Elementary School had an awards assembly for all students with Principal Robert Keyes doing the honors.
According to Keyes, total enrollment for SCES, K-6th grade is 497 students.
The awards hand out included: honor roll; special awards for reading; math; writing; perfect attendance; homework completion; artists of the year and Harford Fair recognition.
There were 17 sixth grade students receiving Presidential Fitness silver medals and four students receiving Presidential Fitness gold medals for their high academic standing. Gold Medal recipients were: Canyon Stone, Adam Rockwell, Robert Palonis and Devon Dubanowitz.
The 2013 SCES Principal’s Award was presented to Canyon Stone. Previously Canyon had accompanied Principal Keyes to a luncheon at the Green Gables for the county Principal’s award presented this year to Susquehanna’s candidate, Stone.
The students were invited to visit the Susquehanna Public Library and take part in the special events planned for the summer. The librarian brought books to show what will be available for the students.
A highlight of this year’s assembly was recognizing a “special teacher” who is retiring.
Mrs. Carolyn Homer has been teaching for 35 years and, according to Mrs. Kathleen Hilling, no one realizes how many lives she has touched with her, “I care about you” message she extended on a daily basis to both students and other faculty members.
“This is something we need now and then,” Hilling said.
She added that “her dedication was unbelievable” and Mrs. Homer’s students presented her with pink roses.
