County teams should have many volleyball contenders

BY JOHN LUND

The Susquehanna girls’ volleyball team had last season come to an abrupt end in a district finals loss to Dunmore. This season, head coach Jeff Baldwin is hoping at an opportunity for some redemption.

“We’ve had really good games with Dunmore and they’ve basically become the team to beat in the league,” Baldwin said. “The league is getting very competitive in the past few years and anyone can beat anyone.”

Baldwin has been coach for the past six years and has an experienced team coming back, with four returners coming back from the varsity level.

“Last season was an excellent season, and we reached our goal of getting into the district game but came up short,” Baldwin said. “this season we’re hoping that the roll we’ve been on for the past couple years will continue and will get to that game again.”

Some of this year’s team hasn’t seen varsity time, but Baldwin is confident that practice will help with the fluidity of the team.

“I’m looking for us to have continuity in the beginning of the season,” Baldwin said. “I feel like we have enough talent and the girls still have the fire and drive to get back to the district championship game.”

The Sabers show a tall and strong roster with athleticism that will help with blocking and serving and in making the team a contender for another season.

“I try to teach the girls communication and to make sure that they know how to play together,” Baldwin said. “Once they trust each other and learn to pass they’ll have a great time this season. We’re also teaching the basics to get refreshed and start from square one.”

While the Sabers have had recent success on the court, Baldwin also prepares the girls for success off of it.

“I’m hoping that the seniors enjoyed their experience and had fun, and obviously I always want to send them out on a high note with a winning season,” Baldwin said. “I’m hopeful that they can take any bit of our work ethic or what I’ve tried to teach them and apply it to become a good person outside of the gym for the real world. It’s not always just about sports.”
