Times Shamrock to sell off Weekly Group

Times-Shamrock Communications announced Monday that it is marketing the Towanda Printing Company, including the Daily Review, Commercial Printing and the Times Shamrock Weekly Group – of which the Susquehanna County Independent is a part of – along with other daily newspapers and alternative newsweeklies, for sale.

The dailies being marketed for sale include the Towanda Daily & Sunday Review, The Shamokin News-Item, The Petersburg (VA) Progress-Index and the Virgin Islands Daily News. The alternative newsweeklies for sale include the Baltimore (MD) City Paper, the Orlando (FL) Weekly, the San Antonio (TX) Current, the Cleveland (OH) Scene, and the Detroit (MI) MetroTimes.

“The Towanda Printing Company has been a strong, profitable investment for us for many years,” said George Lynett, Jr., CEO of Times-Shamrock Communications. “The Daily Review was the first daily newspaper we purchased outside of Scranton, and I personally enjoyed serving as Publisher of the Daily Review from 2006 through 2008. While it is a great newspaper and a great community, as we look to diversify our family’s holdings and reinvest in our core Northeast PA market, it made sense for us to offer The Towanda Printing Company for sale to someone who could take it to the next level of growth.”

The sale process will be handled by Cribb, Greene, and Associates, a leading merger-and-acquisition firm in the U.S. newspaper industry.

Daily Review and Times Shamrock Weekly Group publisher Greg Zyla echoed Lynett’s feelings concerning the sale of the newspapers.

“I am honored to have been a publisher with Times Shamrock for 13 years,” said Zyla. “We will certainly miss our close relationship with the Lynett and Haggerty families, but we also welcome the opportunity to work with new owners and continue our daily, weekly and monthly services of proving the best in newsprint excellence for the benefit of our communities.”
