‘Biggest pumpkin’ contest moves to new venue
BY HELEN B. FOSTER
This year Susquehanna’s biggest pumpkin growers were plagued with rotting pumpkins, mice, deer and a hail storm.
With the number of pumpkins reduced for the usual weigh-in and gathering at the Ron and Sue Crawford residence, the owners of the limited number of available entries from Susquehanna decided to take their pumpkins and one squash entry to Roba’s Family Farm in Dalton, for their Sept. 14 weigh-in.
According to the report, Susquehanna County residents’ entries earned “bragging rights” – the main reason for the effort that goes into growing big pumpkins and came away happy from the weigh-in.
Adam ‘Buff’ Buffington was awarded 6th place for his 857 pound pumpkin and received $150 prize money. He also earned the Howard Dill Award for having the nicest looking/best color entry. Buffington received an offer of $500 for his pumpkin entry.
Chad Norris placed 8th with a pumpkin weighing 788 pounds with prize money of $50. He also received an offer of money for his pumpkin.
Ron Crawford placed ninth with a 732.50 pound pumpkin for which received $50 prize money. Ron also sold his pumpkin.
The only local squash entry by Dave Burman came in 2nd place. The squash weighed 462 pounds netting Burman $150 in prize money.
