Montrose, Elk Lake tennis doubles compete at districts
Montrose and Elk Lake sent representatives to the District II Class AA tennis doubles championships at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre Tuesday.
The Montrose pairing of Jen Reed and Erica Reeves advanced farthest on the day by making it to the final matches of the day in the quarterfinals.
In the first round, Reed and Reeves won 6-3, 6-0 over Western Wayne’s Leanna O’Hora and Sarah Gardner. The pair advanced to face Dunmore’s Nastashia DeNunzio and Abigail Aronica, playing as the seventh-seed, and earned the upset win in three sets: 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Wyoming Seminary’s Jacqui Meuser and Madison Nardone, playing as the second-seed, defeated the pair in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0.
Also competing for Montrose were Anna Ruseski and Victoria Hinds, who earned a first round win Riverside’s Dionna DeFazio and Kelsey Shaughnessy, 6-1, 6-0.
The pair would fall in the second round however to Valley View’s Audra Stafursky and Brittney Mecca who were playing as the eighth-seed. Ruseski and Hinds lost the first set 6-2 but responded to win 6-2 in the second set. Valley View would answer however by taking the third and final set, 6-0.
Elk Lake’s Danielle Callas and Kalie Murray were eliminated in a first round loss to MMI Prep’s Claire Sheen and Gaby Becker, 6-1, 6-0.
Also competing for Elk Lake were Kayla Mosier and Becca Phillips, who also suffered a first round loss to Honesdale’s Maddie Ludwig and Jeneen Gallik, 6-1, 6-2.
Montrose also competed in the District 2 Class AA team championship as the sixth-seed against Valley View Thursday.
The Meteors won two singles matches but lost a third and were swept in doubles to fall to the Cougars, 3-2, in the quarterfinal match at Birchwood Tennis Club.
Reed came back from a 6-0 loss in the first set and won the next two 6-3, 6-4 to pick up the win. Her teammate Reeves took both of her sets, 6-2, in the win.
Montrose finished the season with a 10-6 overall record.
