For a few minutes, Susquehanna’s Gabby Cina was able put her sorrows behind her and be a teenager.

The sophomore, whose mother was killed in a car accident Wednesday, played in the Lady Sabers’ game Thursday against Elk Lake and had a whale of a performance.

Coming off the bench, Cina scored seven points, had six rebounds and a pair of steals in a 57-27 win over Elk Lake, perhaps the most fitting way she could pay tribute to her mother.

“I called her the day it happened and the first thing she said was, ‘I’m playing tomorrow night,” Susquehanna coach Errol Mannick said. “I think it was a chance for her to have an outlet, at least for a few minutes.

“We had a packed gym and the booster club raised nearly $1,000 for the family. They donated all their proceeds from the game.”

Anyone who would like to help out Cina and her family can do so through a fund created at Peoples Neighborhood Bank, 215 Erie Boulevard, Susquehanna, PA 18847. Checks can be made payable to the Cindy Westbrook Memorial Fund.
