Gospel style featured at county chorus

Gospel music was featured prominently in Thursday’s County Chorus concert with both the Junior High and Senior High choruses offering up praise numbers for the audience in the Montrose auditorium. Each number featured student soloists with varying gospel styles.

The Senior High Chorus, under the direction of Thomas Welch, sang “Heaven’s Gate” by Carl Strommen, with break out features of praise styles from Kira Karpov, Kyra Ricci, Justin Zaleski, Katie O’Neill, Spencer Conklin, Jillian Gieski and Allison Stuenzi.

Lathrop Street Elementary’s Nino Bennici led the Junior High Chorus in an improvisational gospel jam with about a dozen featured student vocalists.

Bennici said that during a demonstration of gospel music during the day, he discovered, “there are some awesome gospel singers in this group.”

In addition to the gospel numbers, the Senior High Chorus performed “Go Ye Into All the World,” by Sally Albrecht; and “Shut de Do,” by Randy Stonehill, featuring Lackawanna Trail soprano Alyssa Walker.

The concert concluded with “Jubilate Deo” by Jay Althouse. Welch said his closing song held a special place in his heart. He told the audience he first performed the piece under the direction of his high school chorus teacher – Nino Bennici.

The Junior High Chorus performed “Glorificamus Te,” by Jerry Estes; “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” arranged by Roger Emerson; “Let it Go,” arranged by Mac Huff; and “A Patriotic Salute,” by Linda Spevacek.

Elk Lake ninth grader Korena Kraynak served as the accompanist for the Junior High Chorus; Kristen Burkhart was the Senior High Chorus accompanist.

Other musicians participating in some of the musical numbers were: student musicians, Jon Best and Tony Bennici; as well Scott Zimmerman and Dave Cooper, choral directors from Montrose and Elk Lake.

Cooper is retiring this year and his career has brought him full circle. He told the audience he performed on the Montrose stage for District Chorus in 1969 under the direction of Cyril Stretansky.
